Gradually, housemates in the ongoing Big Brother Naija are adjusting to the realities of the show. From the fun and excitement that heralded their entrance into the Big Brother House, the contestants are now faced with the first-ever eviction in the new season. Who goes first?
The first BBNaija Lockdown Sunday Live show was held On Sunday and there were a lot of surprises for the audience and the housemates. The first twist that Ebuka announced is that every housemate will be put up for eviction. A housemate’s chance of staying in the house depends on how much the audience votes for them.
However, the Head of House and Deputy Head of House is automatically saved from eviction. The second twist of the night is that there will be a live housemate eviction show on Sundays. What this means is that the four housemates with the least number of votes will also face the risk of eviction. The other housemates have to vote for whom they want to stay in the house, and whoever has the least number of votes from the housemates will be evicted.
Meanwhile, Lucy has emerged the second Head of House (HoH) in BBNaija Lockdown edition. She emerged winner of the weekly Head of House game on Monday night and picked fellow housemate, Prince, to be her Deputy Head of House. Her win gives them both an exclusive access to the luxurious Head of House lounge and immunity from the week’s imminent evictions.
The weekly HoH game is modelled after the popular Snakes and Ladders board game. It starts with each housemate rolling the dice to get a ‘6’ before moving their totems across the numbered squares. They will encounter obstacles that would take them a few squares backwards or to complete a task like shooting a basketball through a hoop or drinking a bottle of water as quickly as they can. In some cases, their totems could land on squares that allow them to move several squares ahead. The housemates are given one minute to complete the game or go as far as they can before the buzzer goes off.
After doing poorly at the last challenge, the Big Brother Naija lockdown housemates were eager to do better this week and snatch the Head of House title from Nengi, who was exempted from playing the game this week.
At the end of the game, Neo, Ozo, and Lucy had their scores tied. To break this, Big Brother called for a game of ‘sudden death’, which involved each of them rolling the dice. The housemate, who landed the highest number on the dice would be declared the winner. Lucy was lucky enough to land a ‘6’ on her first throw beating Ozo and Neo, who landed a ‘5’ and ‘1’ respectively.
The voting process for the new season of Big Brother Naija has officially kicked off. Fans not only get to vote for their favourite housemate, but they now also stand a chance to win N1m in the BBNaija Fave Housemate Lock-in competition, the new twist from Biggie.
To qualify, customers need to have an active DStv or GOtv account, download the MyDStv or MyGOtv apps from the various app stores and LOCK-IN the housemate they believe will win. The competition is open to both new and returning customers.
The lock-in period will be open from Thursday, July 30th till Monday, August 3rd. At the end of the season, the viewer with the accurate Fave Housemate Lock-In will go through a raffle draw where 30 winners will emerge and win N1m each.
Meanwhile, fans, who would like to keep their favourite housemate in the house can vote using the following channels: SMS: Text vote and the name of the housemate to 32052.
It has been revealed that the fifth edition of Big Brother Naija, Africa’s most popular reality TV show (Lockdown Edition), reportedly runs on a production budget of over N1 billion. This amount, which was revealed by sources close to the producers of the show, includes the salaries of a team of over 350 people working behind the scenes. However, this amount does not include the cost of construction, design and furnishing of the Big Brother House, which serves as the show’s set and is estimated to cost about N2.5 billion.
The show, which boasts several A-list celebrities as part of its alumni, first came to Nigerian TV like Big Brother Nigeria in 2006 and returned for a second season in 2017 rebranded as Big Brother Naija.
BBNaija, as fans of the show like to call it, has grown increasingly popular over the years, gathering a continental fanbase with viewers from 49 African countries and the diaspora.
The fifth season of Big Brother Naija premiered on July 19, 2020, and as usual, conversations about the show are already dominating social media. Data from Keyhole, a social media monitoring tool estimates that every day, Big Brother Naija related conversations reach a 370 million audience, and that in the last five days, over 760,000 people around the world have posted something about the show online. On TV, the show is broadcast to over 40 million viewers across Africa.
While MultiChoice prides itself on delivering top-notch entertainment via Big Brother Naija and its other shows, not many are aware of how capital intensive the production of premium TV entertainment can be.
According to Accenture, MultiChoice Nigeria had contributed over N634 million to the Nigerian economy over the past five years. This includes over N49 billion spent in developing local creative talent, sourcing and producing local content for DStv, GOtv, M-Net, SuperSport, and Africa Magic, and investing in building local production infrastructure.
The report states that MultiChoice made an N32 billion investment in the Nigerian creative industry while contributing over N39 billion in tax and regulatory fees to the economy. Additionally, MultiChoice provided gainful employment to over 12,000 Nigerians during this same period.
